Bob Haase's Another Can Of Worms

02-Jan-2014

Why Another Can of Worms?

I'm sure that some people may wonder why I write "Another Can of Worms" or at least wonder why I call it that.  After writing close to 300 commentaries, I thought maybe it is time to explain why I write it and why I call it "Another Can of Worms".

It is not my intent to try to convince others to look at things the way I do, or to believe in the same things I do.  My intent is to try to look at things in a different way and to look at all sides of a situation. I feel very strongly that we all have a right to our beliefs and opinions and just because they may differ it doesn't mean that they are necessarily wrong.  My life's experiences are what helped form my beliefs and opinions and most people's beliefs and opinions are formed by their life experiences.

Many years ago I had the opportunity to listen to a presentation by Dr. Morris Massey from the University of Colorado at Boulder entitled "What You Are Is Where You Were When".  He broke down the different time frames and the influence or impact they had on the people at that time.  He also tried to explain how the things that happened to us over our lifetime could change the way we feel and our beliefs. The idea was that if we could better understand why a person felt the way they did that we could have a better chance of working together and reaching a mutual understanding or compromise. Maybe our elected representatives should watch a tape of that presentation!

Many of the things that I write about are common sense ideas that we might take for granted.  You might even say that everybody knows that, but I try to break them down and look at them in different ways.  The way we look at things today seems to be much different than we looked at them as little as 20 years ago.  Do you think the comments by Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty on gay rights would have been received differently twenty or thirty years ago than they were today?  Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with his comments, he still has a right to his opinion and you have a right to yours.

Today the media tries their best to be politically correct so as not to offend anyone.  As an example the Associated Press a while back said that it would not use the term "illegal immigrant" as the word "illegal" is offensive.  To me if the person is not here legally, they must be here illegally. I know the problem is a lot more complex than that, but I like to look at things as plain and simple as I can and try to find or suggest solutions to problems.  What I say may not be politically correct, but I am concerned more with the problem than the politically correctness of it. Maybe I am wrong in thinking that way, but it is still my opinion and my right to express what I feel.  You have the same right and I look forward to any comments you may have.  Maybe if we all work together we can find solutions to some of the problems we hear about in the news every day.  Life is "Another Can of Worms" in that it is always changing and we all look at it differently.

Bob Haase is the host of “Outdoors Thursday” heard Thursday mornings at 9:10 a.m. on News-Talk 1450 KFIZ.
