FDL Landmark Closing Doors After 82 Years

27-May-2020

It’s official. The last cup of famous clam chowder has been served at Schreiner’s Restaurant in Fond du Lac. The press release issued Wednesday morning confirmed what social media and employees had been saying for the past few days. The landmark that has been around since 1938 and served more than 500,000 guests a year, is closing its doors.

“It has been my incredible honor to be a part of Schreiner’s Restaurant for most of my life, from busboy to baker/cook to owner. My time with original owners Bernie and Maureen Schreiner was invaluable and a true joy. Ultimately the formula for success for the Schreiners’ was simple: serve great food at a fair price and treat customers and employees as family” says Paul Cunningham, president of Schreiner’s. Cunningham began his Schreiner's career in 1969 as a 15-year-old busboy, and along with his wife Joan are owners of this historic restaurant. The Cunningham’s were assisted in management by their daughter and son-in-law Marcia and Nathan Haupt. These four members of management have collectively worked for over 100 years at Schreiner's.

Craig Molitor, president of Destination Lake Winnebago Region said “What an awesome and welcoming beacon it has been for this community for generations and generations! Schreiner’s offering of old-world friendliness and celebration of comfort food with traditional family recipes, combined with the recent addition of Bernie’s Pub made it a destination restaurant any community would love to have. The food, the friends, and the iconic business will be missed” Molitor went on to say.

The Cunningham and Haupt families stated in near unison that “the pleasure was all ours to work with and serve such dedicated and wonderful folks!”

Many people traveling north 41 to packers games or south to Brewers games made a Schreiner's stop. Why would they stop in FDL now?

Tragic news to have your failure as a business to be a headline news story.
Wonder what the back story is ? Cashing out because the Prime real estate being bought by some corporate giant to put their chain restaurant there?

This a long time in the making, shortened hours, etc. Sorry to see it closed but like lots of people, I haven't been there in years.

Just the beginning of the economic blight across the Wisconsin business landscape caused by the bumbling leadership of inexperienced govonor Evers and his Democratic handlers.

Has nothing to do with the governor or democrats. You should be ashamed to even suggest that is why they closed there doors. I was a loyal customer for 40 years. Demographics changed, old people died out, prices crept up, portions diminished. Waitresses were crabby and inattentive too often. That’s why the business closed.

we lived in Waukesha WI every year we came to fdl visiting and ate at schreiner's 2 x day. in the restaurant there was a young busboy and every time he came 2 pick up the dirty dishes he would say may I?in 2012 we stayed in FDL as our daughter was dying of cancer, we ate at the restaurant 2-3 x a day, my son was with me he was in food service 30 years manager of Marriott's many years retired we were eating and the manager came over 2 c how everything was well with my son and the manager started talking food service they forgot about me. after 4 days I asked the manager if I could ask him something he said yes I told him about the wonderful busboy we had in the 70 and wanted 2 know what happened 2 him. the manager told me that boy was me, and how he came to be the manager I love it, the restaurant was the best oh so clean remember the white blue tile the waitresses so neat and clean even talked 2 a couple that were there 4 years, there will never be another like Schreiner's how very sad my husband and I would take trips up north and stop and stay 2-3 days just to go to Schreiner's after 64 years he also passed away memories live 4 ever
well I better stop thank u for traveling down the road and back again
take care b safe love JoAnn Julia
