Marian University Prepares For Budget Shortfall

Marian University announced Tuesday (6/2/2020) it is taking proactive steps in anticipation of the negative impacts of COVID-19 on the operating budget and enrollment projections.

The following academic programs are being deactivated: Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Administration and Leadership, Master of Arts in Education, Area of Focus: Educational Leadership, Master of Arts in Education, Area of Focus: Educational Technology, Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Arts in Music Industry, Minor in Music, Minor in Art History and Minor in Studio Art. Faculty positions associated with these programs have also been eliminated, along with six staff positions within the University.

“This attempt to balance what’s in the best interest of the University with our genuine care and concern for our faculty and staff is painful,” said Acting President Dr. Michelle Majewski. “As we face the significant challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty it’s created, we remain committed to serving our extraordinary students and continue to be grateful for the strength each member of the Marian University continues to display.”

In addition to an anticipated decrease in enrollment, Marian University is also bracing for the financial impact of the costs associated with the public health measures it will require to bring students, faculty and staff back together to learn, live and work on campus.

“We will place our Mission and Values at the center of every decision we make,” said Majewski. “As we move through these unprecedented times, I believe Marian University will continue to serve as an anchor for educational excellence into the foreseeable future.”
