Triple-A Predicts a Busy Travel Weekend Ahead

Triple-A says nearly 43-million Americans will kick off summer with a vacation over the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. The agency says unofficial kickoff to summer vacation season will see the second-highest travel volume on record, behind only 2005. Over 826-thousand Wisconsin residents are expected to travel this weekend, up 3.3 percent from 2018. Of those people traveling, over 746-thousand people in the state are expected to travel by car over the Memorial Day weekend. Triple-A predicts the greatest amount of congestion over the roads this weekend will be Thursday and Friday in the late afternoon as people leaving work early mix with holiday travelers.

Despite the national gas price average rising to near the three-dollar per gallon mark, the vast majority of holiday travelers will drive to their destinations. 37.6 million people across the country are estimated to travel by car over the long holiday weekend. As of Sunday, the national average for a gallon of gas was $2.85, while Wisconsin’s average price at the pump was $2.83. Drivers in California had the highest average price at $4.04, while Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and South Carolina had the lowest at $2.46.
